ABOUT THE AREA

Lubec is the one of the last unspoiled downeast Maine rural/oceanside spots where the sun first rises on the shores of the continental U.S.A. and where there is much to enjoy!

When you want to stay local:

Sign up early for a week of music lessons at Summer Keys.

Find and photograph four area Lighthouses!

Only a quarter of a mile from the cabin is Carrying Place Cove and the Coastal Trail head at the beginning of the 481-acre Quoddy Head State Park. Hike the 2 miles along the rugged coastline to the West Quoddy Head Lighthouse and Visitor Center and enjoy a picnic overlooking Sail Rock, the easternmost point of land in the continental U.S.A. There are many, many well- maintained trails in the Cobscook Bay area or if you prefer, join the local Pathfinders, free of charge, who hike a favorite spot together each Sunday afternoon at 2PM.

There are local souvenir and gift shops, including Monica's Hand-Made-Chocolates shop, on Pleasant Street, and art and craft galleries to view local artisans' work.

If you want to explore the surrounding area:

Take the 10 minute drive and cross the toll-free bridge to Campobello Island, New Brunswick, Canada (photo ID required by Customs). On Campobello you will find the Roosevelt Summer Cottage; the 2,800-acre Roosevelt-Campobello International Park; the delightful 9-hole Herring Cove Golf Course and Herring Cove Provincial Park.  Be sure to also stop by Head Harbor, from which you can go whale-watching in the Bay of Fundy. There are five trips a day to choose from! Keep your eyes open for finbacks, minke and perhaps even a humpback, as well as harbor seals, grey seals and bald eagles nesting on nearby islands.

Or, you may prefer to take a car ferry to Deer Island, and enjoy a guided sea-kayaking experience before you go on to L'Etete, New Brunswick, mainland Canada, to visit the Kingsbrae Garden, www.kingsbraegarden.com, a majestic 27 acre horticultural masterpiece in St. Andrews, just a short drive from L'Etete, and browse in the boutiques or lunch in one of the St. Croix riverside cafes or restaurants.

Another must-not-miss sightseeing trip, from late May through August only, is to take an early morning excursion from Cutler harbor, a short 20 miles away. Join Cap'n Andy Patterson, www.boldcoast.com on his boat the Barbara Frost and enjoy the ride to Machias Seal Island just 10 miles off-shore, to see thousands of Atlantic Puffins and Terns at their breeding ground. This is a photographic opportunity you will always remember! Take a picnic and water! It is a 4-6 hour trip!
